1. Director's Ramblings
Welcome to the April 2008 edition of the Updoc Films Newsletter. Having survived April Fools Day, the Updoc Staff are back at work, and enjoying the last few days of springtime before the onslaught of the Texas Summer comes back to keep us locked up in our Air Conditioned offices. Lots of exciting new projects are on the make, including two new shorts from Devon Grey and a new stop motion animation by Kay Nettle.
2. Kinetoscopic Wonderment 2008
Updoc staff and family will be attending the sixth annual film festival at the University of Texas on Friday, April 25th. With three official submissions to the program, this year looks like the best yet with plenty of variety to enjoy. For more information, visit the official Kinetoscopic Wonderment website.
3. Quilombo Country
Updoc Films attended a showing of Leonard Abram's documentary Quilombo Country recently. The film tracks a lost history of Brazilian slaves who rose up against their masters and later formed villages throughout much of the Brazilian rain forest. We were all blown away by the movie and recommend it to everyone. Quilombo Country is a perfect example of how independent media is able to bring stories to the rest of the world that our conventional media wouldn't touch. To learn more, visit the official website.
4. The Vancouver Asian Film Festival
The Vancouver Asian Film Festival (VAFF) is Canada's oldest festival dedicated to exhibiting films and videos by North American artists of Asian heritage. It is committed to supporting both emerging talent and established filmmakers. Visiting artists have included Loni Ding, Justin Lin, Wes Kim, and Michael Kang, as well as BC filmmakers, Desiree Lim, Nilesh Patel, Eunhee Cha, and Jeff Chiba Stearns.
VAFF invites submissions for its 12th annual festival, November 6-9, 2008. Early bird deadline is April 30th; final closing deadline is May 31st. For More information, click here.
5.The Toronto Urban Film Festival
ONESTOP Media Group (OMG) and its community art programming partner Art for Commuters (A4C) are proud to announce the 2nd annual Toronto Urban Film Festival (TUFF) call for submissions. TUFF is an 8-day public film festival that runs on ONESTOP's Digital Network in the Toronto Transit Commission, September 5 -12 2008 while the city hosts one of the largest film festivals in the world, Toronto International Film Festival. For more information, click here.
6.Behind The Scenes! How The Fake News Works
Devon recently sent us a sneak peak of his latest short film that is currently wrapping up production. Much like his other films, How The Fake News works explores and exposes hidden agendas behind mainstream television and network news. We hope you enjoy the few images he's provided as much as we have. Click here to check them out.
